The Station has an enviable reputation as one of the leading art exhibition venues in the North East. With its original mellow stone walls, high vaulted iron roof and abundance of natural light, the building provides a wonderful ambience to display art to its best advantage.
There are a number of dedicated exhibition spaces in The Station, including the spacious mezzanine gallery, the broad corridors leading to the food and retail premises, and the walls of the old platform itself.
One of the characteristics of The Station as an exhibition venue, is that the building itself brings in a large and varied footfall – over 250,000 visits in its first year of opening. Not all of these visitors would necessarily visit a conventional art gallery, yet all – children included – enjoy spending time browsing the art displays.
Most of the exhibits are for sale, making perfect presents, mementoes or investment buys.
Throughout the year, The Station Gallery hosts regular exhibitions, either showcasing pieces from individual artists or bringing together work from a variety of exhibitors and artistic media, including ceramics, textiles, painting, jewellery and photography.
Recent events have included the A1 Open Art Exhibition, which attracted over 1,200 entries from professional and amateur artists – 250 of which were selected for display. Prizes of £4,500 were awarded by the judging panel to the best works in different categories, with a further £2,500 in prizes awarded by public vote as ‘The People’s Choice’. During the six weeks that the exhibition ran, over £24,000 of paintings and exhibits were sold.
Other exhibitions have included the highly successful ‘Spot on the Wall’ open exhibition where over 200 entries were displayed; and the unique show of original ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ illustrations. Art groups and community groups are also encouraged to display their work, as well as local schools.
