The restoration of The Station was made possible by an enormous community effort, with people from all walks of life contributing their time, skills and support. The Station is run as a not-for-profit charity with individual businesses leasing space and, as such, relies heavily on the dedicated work of Friends and Volunteers. New Friends and Volunteers are always welcomed and individual donations, however small, are much appreciated.

Friendship benefits us

Friends play an important part in the development of The Station and in ensuring that this great building continues to be a wonderful asset to the community. Rents from commercial tenants and income from room hire finance much of The Station’s running costs. However, we are not able to meet all of our costs or initiate improvements without the income we receive from Friends and the support we obtain from our Volunteers.

Our Community Fund regularly runs courses for local groups, which are hugely appreciated and which do aim to cover costs - but not every activity can pay its way (nor should it). Again, an assured revenue stream from Friends' subscriptions is an enormous help.

Friendship benefits you

Friendship benefits The Station and so benefits you indirectly but there are also more direct benefits. In 2011, Seasons are offering a 10% discount to Friends at both The Station and their Darlington restaurant. There is a reduction of 50p on full-priced adult cinema tickets and Lacey's Cheese gives 10% off all purchases over £10. Other tenants may also choose to offer a discount.

We will also keep you informed of what’s happening at The Station through newsletters and emails. This includes invitations to arts previews and advance notice of key events.

Finally, Friendship makes you a member of the Trust. You will be consulted on major issues and have the right to vote at general meetings of The Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust - the organisation behind The Station.

Membership costs

Membership of the Friends costs just £24 per calendar year, or £36 for a couple. For a minimum donation of £500 per person you could become a Friend for Life.

Volunteering

As a Volunteer, you'll be joining a sociable and motivated team of people, and will have the priceless satisfaction of helping a non-profit, community-inspired organisation grow and thrive.

There are many opportunities to get involved whether it is helping visitors at the main enquiry desk or assisting with exhibitions and events. Whatever your strengths or time availability, we welcome your contributions!
